The Polar Medal was created in 2015 by the crown and is part of the Canadian Honours System. The medal was issued by the Government of Canada and was administered by the Chancellery of Honours. Potential recipients are nominated by individuals or groups who feel they meet the criteria to receive the award.

The intent of the medal is to award recognition for those individuals providing exemplary service to the polar regions and Canada's north. Recipients will have generated or encouraged a greater understanding of the northern communities and its people, and/or contributed to polar exploration, knowledge, research, and the securement of Canada's northern sovereignty.

Physical description note:

Content:
Obverse: contemporary crowned effigy of the Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II, circumscribed with identifying inscription.
Reverse: before a large ship (the Royal Canadian Mounted Police schooner St. Roch) stands two figures (crew members) on the Arctic ice next to a tall iceberg.

Ribbon: watered white; 32 mm.

Attachments: a representation of the north star connects the octagonal medal to the aesthetically rippled and bow-shaped suspension bar.

Accompanied by a blue storage box.
