This series documents the engineering work and scientific research carried out by Stelco in relation to its metallurgical operations, production and maintenance of its mills from 1898 to 1980. Stelco developed its own engineering and metallurgical departments and research center. The records document every aspect of the steelmaking process to improve the quality and the production of a wide variety of products. The engineers built and operated the infrastructure of the company. They generated records in the form of reports, articles, letters, calculations, drawings, minutes and images. They wrote and published articles in magazines and gave conferences around the world. These articles are available in the Series entitled "Publications".
This series contain files produced by the Chief metallurgist J. G. Morrow, M.B.E., a world-renowned engineer, who worked for Stelco for about fifty years. He was previously advisor for the Department of Munitions and Supply in Ottawa during the First World War. He was a pioneer in the development of standards and techniques in Canada. He was recognized for his technical expertise in the production of steel and equipment for wartime uses. His files contain technical reports, correspondence, minutes, drawings and technical specifications. In volume 556 files 13 and 14 there are several letters written by the inventor Leo V. Sullivan describing the "Sullivan process", a new armour steel plate that was developed to be more resistant to gun bullets.
This series comprises files of A. B. Dove, a Stelco engineer who developed the 'Stelmor cooling process' a system that successfully provided controlled cooling of hot-rolled steel in numerous rod mills around the world for over two decades (1950-1970). His files contain notes, test results, correspondence, reports and licenses. One of his major inventions is the "spiral ardox nail", an invention that is used world-wide-today. He was assisted by W. B. Cunningham to develop this new product during the 1950s and Cunningham files are preserved in this series. They consist of working and technical papers including experimentations, test reports, specifications, correspondence, memos and nail terminology papers.
This series contains other types of records such as patent files, training manuals, technical drawings, and photographs related to plants development and some engineering handbooks. A scrapbook of souvenirs, which belonged to J. G. Sibakin, related to the opening of the Stelco Research Centre (volume 624). It contains articles, clippings, programs, advertisings, photographs and letters.
