Accession consists of records created and/or maintained by the Ontario office of the Department of Transport (DoT). The records are entirely survey maps related to the Toronto Area Airport Project (TAAP). In the late 1960s DoT had studied expanding the Malton Airport in order to accomodate an increasing number of passengers. Local opposition to the plan caused DoT to decide instead to build a second Toronto-area airport. In June of 1971 DoT began studying the Pickering area as the preferred site for this new airport.

The maps appear to cover the townships of Pickering, Uxbridge, and Markham and their surrounding areas. It is unclear at what stage of the project these survey maps were created, since no dates are apparent. It is also unclear the exact nature of these maps. The maps are all labelled 'New Toronto Airport' and provide little further contextual information. The base maps are copies, over which staff have marked a variety of demarcations and areas and objects of interest. All maps are criss-crossed by numerous red lines, which possibly demarcate the parcels of land that DoT would eventually expropriate for the construction of the airport (which ultimately was never constructed).

Note that the finding aid refers to 'strips' and a range of 'model' numbers. Again, the usage of these numbers is unclear.
