The records in this accession consist of files from the Information Sciences Division of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), specifically related to the MINISIS software program.

MINISIS was a Database Management Software program that was created by the IDRC in the early 1970s. Through funding of research projects in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean, the IDRC assists communities in the developing world find solutions to social, economic and environmental problems. In 1976, in keeping with the IDRC mandate, the MINISIS Systems Group was established to develop a software to maintain information networks through the management of text based information, in turn, facilitating the global sharing of knowledge. The three principal understandings of the software in its conception were: to develop a complete information management tool and solution; to be utilized and programmed by non-technical staff; to be multi-platform and multilingual, all in order to facilitate the global sharing of knowledge and information. It was fully commercialized some 20 years later, at which point the MINISIS Inc. organization was created, taking over the MINISIS software. It was one of the first Database Management Systems in the world, and is among the oldest surviving software packages in history.

The records in this accession are mostly from the 7850 file block, documenting MINISIS policy and development within the IDRC's mandate. These files document various aspects of the MINISIS program, such as legal matters concerning MINISIS; the distribution of MINISIS to developing countries; business plans; the commercialization of MINISIS; and marketing undertaken to market MINISIS. In addition, there are files from the 7940 file block: these document meetings held in the 1990s concerning the role of MINISIS in the Development Assistance Community.
