Interview of Winston Young by Rick Stow. Winston was born to an Irish Quebec family that converted to being Jehovah's Witnesses. His dad worked in the mines at Val D'Or, as did Winston for a couple of years before setting off to make his mark in the world. Winston settled in Toronto in 1954, and got a job in construction. He is a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. He apprenticed as a lay missionary in Northwestern Quebec. While there he began reading Left Wing literature which another missionary had swapped for copies of the Watchtower. After his move south, he worked briefly at Canada Packers where he met a member of the National Federation for Labor Youth. He attended the Warsaw Youth Festival in 1955 and spent twelve weeks in Eastern Europe altogether. His future spouse, Mary Jane, also attended. In 1957, when the National Federation of Labor Youth (NFLY) became the Socialist Youth League of Canada, he was the only non-Party member elected to the executive. NFLY had been national in scope. The Socialist Yough League of Canada (SYLC) was the reorganization of Youth after the 1957 defections. Winston was its Cultural Director. Winston learned banjo to play with the NFLY folk group, which evolved to the duo 'Winston and Mary Jane', present at early Mariposa festivals. They also toured England for a year in 1960. During this time, he took a leave from SYLC, but never returned. <59mn>
