Radio play in a series produced for the Department of Health and Welfare as a community service. This episode is about how food labelling regulations protect consumers. This is illustrated by the story of an attempt by a soft drink company to pretend that its beverage contains more orange juice than it really does. According to the regulations from the Food and Drug Directorate of the Department of National Health and Welfare, compounds or mixtures must contain at least 51 percent of the predominating ingredient after which they are named. Labels must not mislead. For example, if fruit flavouring is more artificial than natural, the label should not use the illustration of a fruit. Most food producers send copies of new labels to the Directorate to get its opinion. If an inspector feels that a label is fraudulent, misleading or deceptive, or is not in accordance with general principles of honest and fair practices, the label is sent back to the merchant with the suggestion that a correction be made. The final word would be with the courts. The Food and Drugs Act incorporates legal stipulations on what can be put on food and drink labels. In interpreting the laws, the emphasis is on intent. Every label must contain the mandatory information of weight or volume of contents, name and address of manufacturer and, where desirable, a list of ingredients in the order of their proportion. <10mn>
