Interview of R.S. Johnson, forester and consultant. This interview was conducted at his home in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, by W.A. Reeks as part of a series of interviews with Canadian foresters for the Forest Management Institute's oral history of forestry in Canada. He speaks about such subjects as: his education and career development; timber cruising in Ontario, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia; life in the logging camps in the 1930s; forest management and the hemlocks of Lunenburg County; the Mersey Paper Company; forest policy statement in Nova Scotia; cooperation with Balch and Seeley of the Canadian Forestry Service; Nova Scotia barren lands; the American dog tick and the Stehlen family; timber cruising procedure on Mersey Company limits; applications of aerial photography with Canadian Forestry Service personnel; assessment of the first forest inventory; personal achievements; responsibilities for forest research; a critique of the Canadian Forestry Service; forestry as a career; and views on forest management. <60mn>
