Inscription from Lord Dufferin, dated 1899, on the verso of the cover page, in black ink, u.r.: When I arrived in Quebec in 1872 I found that the municipality was upon the point of pulling down the old walls and picturesque gates of the city, one of the members of the council having contracted to mend the roads, and hoping to make a good thing by using the walls as his material. With some difficulty I convinced the authorities to abandon their project and to rebuild some of the gates, and with this view I submitted to them a general plan for dealing with the walls and bastions. This included also a residence for the Governor General in the Citadel. The plans for these improvements were prepared by Mr. W.H. Lynn of Belfast, but only some of these were carried out. / D&A. / June 1899.
