Canada. Dept. of National Defence. Algonquin Regiment : The Algonquin Regiment originated in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on 1 July 1900, when the "97th Regiment of Rifles" was authorized to be formed. It was redesignated the "97th Regiment (Algonquin Rifles) in June 1903, "The Algonquin Rifles" in May 1920, and "The Algonquin Regiment" in February 1929. Then, in November 1940, it was designated the "2nd (Reserve) Battalion, The Algonquin Regiment", and in February 1946 as "The Algonquin Regiment". And then, in October 1954, the regiment was converted to armour and redesignated as "the Algonquin Regiment (26th Armoured Regiment)" and in May of 1958 as the "Algonquin Regiment (RCAC). In March of 1965 the regiment was converted to Infantry and redesignated as the "The Algonquin Regiment".
