Interview of Malcolm S. Kuhring by Tim Sims for the National Aerospace Museum. Subjects discussed include: Kuhring schooled at Rothesay, New Brunswick; apprenticed at Hamilton Machine Company in Ontario; then joined RCAF at Camp Borden as an AC2; then worked for the CNR Radio chain; Canadian Vickers worked as an aircraft builder; worked as an aircraft inspector; NRC hired Kuhring as an instrument maker; early noise tests were dangerous; mill building made a good engine lab; 1941 engine lab moved to Montreal Road; Engine Lab Projects include: gas octane rating for aviation fuel; water injection to boost air engine power or allow lower grade fuel; NRC pioneered water injection; gold-plated bearings for corrosion; early engines needed extra heavy oil for makers guarantee and so unflyable during winter; A.V.M. Ferrier directed Canada to change to light oil and short warm-up period; NRC tested for oil flow with dry chemical hot water bottle iron filing; cold tests done in cold chamber; Wirth; cold weather starting pioneered by bush pilot Tommy Sears; 1945 B.I.O.S. survey of German war research - modern privateering; competition among allies for war spoils and among RCN and Army; WWII Jeep engine powered hydrofoil- RCN plan for fast smoke-layer drone; main problem was 9 foot waves; Kuhring chaired committee and was test pilot; Casey Baldwin - provided spare hydrofoil for Cape Breton tests; National Aerospace Museum began with display of surplus spare parts of Eagle engine and then saved University of Toronto obsolete classroom engines; collection stores at NRC flight research station in Arnprior, then collection transferred to NAE in Uplands; Uplands opening ceremony in 1960; Kuhring was interim curator of National Aerospace Museum and later collected for the National Museum of Science and Technology; Kuhring retired in 1967 but continued as chairman of AC on Bird Hazards to Aircraft; and Hans Blokpoel. <46m>
