The National Harbours Board was created in 1936 as an agency corporation with jurisdiction over various harbours and grain elevators, including the port of Vancouver. The port is responsible for the maintenance, upgrading and expansion of port facilities and property in order to ensure safe, efficient, and economical management and services to local, national or international port users.
The large majority of files in this accessions concern leases made by individuals and companies for the occupation and use of port facilities and property. These files often include the terms of the lease, correspondence concerning maintenance, repair, and improvement of property either by the port or by the lessee, and, finally, rent payment. Other files pertain to oders-in-council affecting the port, the establishment of harbour headlines and foreshore rights as well as a series of files concerning the conformity of harbour construction plans to the relevant sections of the Navigable Waters Protection Act.

Custodial history:

These records were originally held in British Columbia. They were transferred to the National Capital Region in 2016 and are available for consultation there.
