Recording of Farley Mowat’s experiences during a tour of the Canadian North, including interviews of people in various northern communities. This is the ninth program in the series. In this program, Farley Mowat begins by describing a mountain chain on Baffin Island. He speaks with Philip Cove, a geography student employed by the Department of Northern Affairs to conduct an economic survey. In Clyde [River] there is a Hudson Bay Company store, Department of Northern Affairs buildings and Department of Transport buildings, and an Anglican mission. People do subsistence hunting and very little fur trading. There are about 95 Inuit in the settlement and plans are to build houses for the entire settlement which will be moved across the Bay. The Inuit buy some goods from the Hudson Bay Company store, but they live mostly off their hunting and fishing. There is no airstrip but planes can land on the water in the summer or on the ice during the winter. During the freeze-up and break-up planes have to land at the Coast Guard station 12 miles away. Shipping possibilities are not very good and mail delivery is not very reliable. The manager of the Hudson Bay Company store provides medical care. Many adult Inuit speak English because of their long contact with Department of Transport employees. Inuit children go to school in Churchill and Ottawa. Children who come back during holidays do not want to return to the old way of living. This is a generational split seen throughout the Arctic. At Pond Inlet, there are rows of administrative buildings, homes of white employees and Inuit shacks. Gordon Rogers, Department of Northern Affairs administrator, speaks with Farley Mowat. The settlement at Grise Fjord is the most northerly community. The economy is based on hunting. Fishing is very poor. There is also an interview of Father Vanderbilt about social conditions in Igloolik. <29mn>
