This subseries contains C.I. 44 forms and the corresponding index cards, both on microfilm, as well as a paper registration list of people who registered as native born under the Chinese Immigration Act.
The C.I. 44 is a one-page form that documents each person of Chinese origin or descent in Canada, whom were required to register under section 18 of the Chinese Immigration Act of 1923. Each form includes a photograph of the registered individual and information such as : name, alias, address, occupation, age, gender, marital status, name and address in Canada of husband/wife, names and addresses of children in Canada, birthplace, port of entry, ship, date of arrival, amount paid for the head tax, C.I. 5, C.I. 28, C.I. 30 or C.I. 36 certificate number, height, facial and physical features. Forms contain an area for the Department to write down comments on the individual. Forms may contain a case file number for the individual.
The C.I. 44 forms are on microfilm reels T-16164 to T-16184.
These forms are organized chronologically by date of registration. The majority of forms were created within the twelve-month registration period of Section 18, ending June 30, 1924. A number of forms are related to individuals who were absent from Canada during this period and registered upon their return.
The index cards are used to access the forms. They are organized by rough alphabetical order. Each index card contains information such as: the person's name, C.I. 44 form number, age, and date of registration. Index cards of immigrants include their C.I. 5, C.I. 28, C.I. 30 and C.I. 36 numbers. Index cards of native-born individuals are identified as "N.B." and include the person's date of birth. In some instances, the index card includes a case file number.
The index cards (reels T-16156 to T-16163) can be used to search an individual by name. The C.I. 44 number from the index card can then be used to retrieve the individual's form (reels T-16164 to T-16184).
The registration list (vol. 2463) consists of a single file providing a listing of individuals who registered as native-born under Section 18 of the Chinese Immigration Act of 1923. Information regarding these individuals includes name, birthplace, date of birth, and C.I. 44 number.
