This accession is made up of two distinct blocks of files. The first part is comprised of Shannon files of the Harbours and Rivers Engineering Branch (1893-1952), arranged alphabetically by location of projects (for the most part). There are also a few miscellaneous correspondence files and dredging plant files relating to specific dredges' operation and some contract files. These Shannon files include such material as DPW inspectors weekly progress reports, daily construction reports, copies of indentures between contractors and the Crown, plans, and all manner of correspondence relating to the specific harbours/river engineering projects (project initation including petitions from local citizens, plans, estimates, specifications, contract award correspondence, actual construction work correspondence, follow-up including claims against the contractor, etc.). The dredging plant files relate specifically to the operation of various dredges (including work assigned, employment on dredges, repairs). The contract files are arranged according to location and entail correspondence relating to the award of contracts, progress estimates, testing information on material used, photographs, inspectors daily reports, plans.

The portion of the accession containing development engineering branch files includes records of the district engineers office relating to a range of engineering projects (e.g. - trans canada highway, roads to resources, emo fall out shelters, sewage and water supply systems, reservoirs, etc.) in a number of geographical locations.

Custodial history:

Please note accession W1983-84/262 (FA 11-77) was deleted from the system because it was identical to W1984-85/493 (FA 11-80). Further information can be found in custodial file 9540-R182-2004.
