News conference held by members of a coalition of organizations, with environmental concerns, led by Roy Johnstone of HOPE. Other groups represented in the Coalition are Pollution Probe, Public Interest Advocacy Centre, the Friends of the Earth, and Citizens Against 2, 4-D committee. In his opening statement Johnstone outlines the concerns and recommendations of the group in response to a recent court judgement on the herbicidal spraying of Nova Scotia forests. The four main areas of concern stated were: the lack of an effective regulatory and licencing process to investigate the need for and safety of chemicals; the inadequacy of the legal system which places the onus on the public rather than on the users to prove the non-toxic quality of chemicals; the lack of research into viable alternatives to suspect pesticides; the lack of federal and provincial initiatives in protecting the health and well-being of the public and safety of the environment. Neil Young, New Democratic Party Member of Parliament, comments and cites a similar example of pesticide pollution in the Niagara Peninsula. <44mn>
