Essay by reporter Elizabeth Gray, for the anniversary of the series SUNDAY MORNING, in which she presents excerpts of some of her documentaries featuring memorable music. She recounts her experience of being in St. Mary’s Cathedral in Johannesburg during a service to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Soweto uprising. Gray recorded some women singing Nkosi Sikeleli Africa, the unofficial anthem of southern Africa, after the service, and plays a clip of the performance. Next she plays a clip of the Lord is My Shepherd sung by Archbishop Desmond Tutu at the funeral of white journalist George De’ath in 1986; a clip of drunken people at a rally singing Deutschland Uber Alles in Leipzig in February 1990; an entertainer leading a crowd in the singing of his composition Den Zumpf Geraten in a small park in East Berlin prior to unification, prompting laughter among the crowd of people amidst feelings of betrayal over the unification of Germany; and audio of the Soviet Anthem broadcast from a sound system atop a truck at a rally in October Square in Moscow in April 1993.
