Documentary about Pam Coates, an anti-poverty activist from Saint John, New Brunswick, introduced by Karin Wells. This is part of a series of profiles of anti-poverty activists in Canada. Pam Coates is a recovered alcoholic who was in an abusive marriage and her son died a year earlier, at age 15, of cancer. She received an honorary degree from the University of New Brunswick for her anti-poverty work. Subjects discussed include: the trouble she faced in her life; her work for the National Anti-Poverty Organization (NAPO); discrimination against poor people; her view that Canada could help its poor if it wanted to; whether or not she should run for political office; and her frustration with dealing with political parties about the issue of poverty. Actuality includes a meeting in which anti-poverty activists in Saint John and members of the federal Progressive Conservative caucus task force on poverty, chaired by Senator Erminie Cohen, participate in an exercise to demonstrate how poor families. This begins and concludes with a discussion between the unnamed show host and Elizabeth Gray. <19mn 50s>
