This is a documentary about the controversial suicide barrier being added to the railing of the Prince Edward Viaduct, also known as the Bloor Street Viaduct, over the Don River in Toronto. In late May 2002 construction began of a $6.5 million barrier to prevent people from jumping off the bridge. The documentary begins with a reading by Michael Enright of a description of the building of the Prince Edward Viaduct from the novel “In the Skin of a Lion”. Close to 400 people have committed suicide by jumping off the bridge and the rate has been increasing to 20 suicides a year. The Luminous Veil is the name given to the suicide barrier. Included are interviews of: a doctor who is a suicidologist; people who knew Martin Kruze, a victim of childhood sexual abuse who killed himself by jumping off the bridge; architect Alice Kirkland; the views of people who have mental illness, one of whom states that people have the right to commit suicide but that he has an obligation to try to stop people from committing suicide; another woman whose partner killed himself by jumping off the viaduct; and the opinion that the viaduct has become “a suicide magnet”. Subjects discussed include: the inadequacy of services to stop people from committing suicide; and whether or not a suicide barrier can really stop suicidal. <25mn 42s>
