Documentary about the revival of the Russian Orthodox Church which is emerging from 74 years of prosecution due to the Soviet Union’s policy of official atheism. Subjects discussed: the weak condition of the church due to years of oppression; tension within the church between conservative and modern forces; disappointment among some of the faithful who hoped that a free church would help to build a free society; collaboration by the church with the Soviet state; comparisons with the church in Poland; the ancient Slavonic language, the traditional language of the Russian Orthodox Church; the use of the Russian language in church services; an order by the church hierarchy to cease using Russian in church services and an order to the parish of Virgin of Vladimir church to relocate; evangelical churches trying to win converts in Russia; and legislation to restrict the activities of religious organizations other than the Russian Orthodox Church. Interviewees include: a member of the congregation of Virgin of Vladimir church; Sergei [Filatov], director of a sociological centre in Moscow and a specialist in religion; a lay worker and catechism teacher at Virgin of Vladimir church; a school teacher who had to hide her religious faith in the Soviet era; Gleb Yakunin, a priest and Democratic deputy in the Russian parliament who ended up in a labor camp in the Soviet era and was defrocked recently because he continues to criticize the church; a young woman at an evangelical church service; George [Law], who runs an American-based office in Moscow for foreign missionaries; and an employee of the headquarters of the Russian Orthodox Church, in the external affairs division of the Moscow Patriarch.
