Documentary by Elizabeth Gray about the fate of dissidents in Eastern Europe and the rise of democracy there. She reported on some of them in 1989 and revisits East Germany, Poland and Czechoslovakia. Subjects discussed include: the cause of the downfall of Communism; the role of the dissidents; disillusionment among the dissidents because democratic reform has not gone smoothly; the response of the dissidents when they attained power and were unsure what to do with it; the Solidarity movement; the failure of Lech Walesa; tensions within Czechoslovakia between the Czechs and the Slovaks; the Hungarian minority within Slovakia; nationalist forces as a test of democracy; Vaclav Havel and whether he will be forced to compromise his moral values in order to gain power; mixed feelings about whether East Germany should have united with West Germany; the feelings by some dissidents that they have failed and the possibility that the countries of Eastern Europe will be able to create new ways to make democracy work. Interviewees include Jens Reich, Markus Meckel, and actress Wally Schmidt in Germany; Bronislaw Geremek in Poland; and Helena Luczewa, Rita Klimova, Vaclav Maly, and journalist Jan Urban in Czechoslovakia.
