Documentary by Elizabeth Gray about the situation in Israel amidst the threat of the crisis in the Persian Gulf and the fight for Palestinian independence. Subjects discussed: tension between Israelis who want to negotiate peace with the Palestinians and those who do not; mistrust between Israelis and Palestinians; Israeli anger over the Palestinians’ endorsement of Saddam Hussein; strains within the Israeli left wing; support for the peace process among Palestinian moderates and Israeli moderates; the opinions of moderates and hardliners from both sides, Israeli and Palestinian. Included are interviews of: Yael Dayan, daughter of Moshe Dayan; Anat Hoffman, a member of Jerusalem city council and a member of the Israeli political left; Ehud Ya’ari, Middle-East specialist for Israel television and co-author of a book on the Intifada, the Palestinian uprising; Israeli political scientist Gerald Steinberg; Radwan Abu Ayash of the Arab Media Centre; Dory Gold, a strategic analyst at the Jaffe Center in Tel Aviv; Yeshayahu Anug, a former Israeli ambassador in Ottawa; and Israeli government official spokesperson Yossi Almert. Included is actuality of: the Muslim call to prayer heard in Jerusalem; a radio news item about the killing of a Palestinian from a village near Bethlehem who stabbed three Israelis to death in revenge for the Temple Mount deaths; a crowd in Jerusalem yelling and throwing things at the taxi in which Elizabeth Gray and Anat Hoffman are riding, because they are angry at Hoffman’s support for peace and sympathy for the Palestinians; Jewish settlers from the West Bank protesting the visit of British Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd; and Hoffman telephoning her husband about the attack on her car. <27mn 9s>
