Radio documentary by Elizabeth Gray, Moscow correspondent for the CBC Radio series, SUNDAY MORNING, about the rise of anti-semitism in Russia and the Russian Jews who have chosen to remain in Russia. Anti-semitism was official state policy in the Soviet Union. Now, the greater freedom in Russia brought about by perestroika has also brought with it a more widespread anti-Semitism in Russian society. Jewish residents who have chosen to stay in Russia are encountering discrimination and violence, but the Jewish people also have the freedom to follow their religion and revitalize their culture. Interviewees include American journalist [Natasha] Singer of the U.S. national Jewish newspaper Forward and Moscow rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt. Subjects discussed include: the widespread availability of the anti-Semitic texts The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and Mein Kampf, a court case about anti-semitism, vandalism against Jewish property, the revival of Jewishness through the synagogue, school, a summer camp and cultural activities, the freedom to speak Hebrew and the view that freedom of the press must be upheld despite the anti-Jewish material appearing in print. An example of the new-found freedom of Russian Jews is a Jewish rock group that sings in Yiddish. <13mn 4s>
