Arranged chronologically. Included in the donation is a sampling of fan mail and requests from individuals, commercial enterprises, charities, and many educational institutions for rights to reprint particular For Better or For Worse strips. The fan mail, for the most part, comprises letters from Johnston's enthusiastically devoted followers and attests to the reason Johnston's strip frequently won viewer's popularity polls. One particular group of letters and e-mails was written in response to the storyline in which Elly's mother passes away. Johnston's treatment of the fictional event elicited heartfelt letters from readers who had been through similar life experiences. The sampling of reprint requests alludes to her tremendous popularity as they cover only a few months and indicate the avalanche of requests she must receive yearly.
