This image depicts the moment William Pitt, the first Earl of Chatham, collapses from a stroke while debating at London's House of Lords. Noblemen run to the aid of the stricken speaker. This image, depicting the "prelude" to the earl's death, is closely related to John Singleton Copley's painting of the Death of Chatham (dated c. 1779-1781). The figures are in different postures here, including the earl, whose legs are bent as he collapses and is caught by the men behind him.
