Collection search - A sketch of a bay in Labrador copied from one drawn by an Eskimeau Indian [cartographic material]

George Cartwright inscribed descriptive notes on the map (centred on Kaipokok bay) entitled "A Sketch of a Bay in Labrador copied from one drawn by an Eskimeau Indian". The map itself may have been drawn by his business partner Francis Lucas (d. 1770), previously a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. The annotations incorporate Inuit traditional knowledge: where the cod, seals and salmon congregate at various seasons; where the deer congregate in summer and winter; where to find otter. The comment on plants reflects European concerns: salt marshes to supply hay, large and small trees for building materials or fuel. Squares represent Inuit sod dwellings.
