Inside cover, right: The Lower Canon of the Liard river is about six miles up / stream from the Lower Post of the Hudson's Bay Company which / post was established by a fur trader named Sylvester in 1872 and / bought from him by the Company in 1876. / This trading post is on the northerly bank of the river, / almost opposite the confluence of the Dease and on the Alaska / Highway. / The canon - of which this view is from the southerly bank / towards the head - is about three miles long, from one hundred / to three hundred feet wide and difficult and dangerous to navi- / gate at high water. / The 60th parallel of latitude, here the boundary between / British Columbia and the Yukon, crosses the river near the lower / end of the canon, and the Airport of Watson Lake is about ten / miles to the north-west in Yukon Territory.
