Fonds consists of photographs taken by amateur photographer Sterling Demchinksy documenting Ukrainian Catholic, Ukrainian Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Capatho-Russian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Slovak Greek, Protestant and Ukrainian Baptist churches across Canada. Images are primarily from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. They include, but are not limited to, images taken from Peno, AB, Edmonton AB, Wassel, AB, Skaro, AB, Shandro AB, Swan Plains, SK, Sturgis, SK, Wishart, SK, Saskatoon, SK, Regina, SK, Kamsack, SK, Prince Albert, SK, Meleb, MB, Ruthenia, MB, Angusville, MB, Sirko, MB, Winnipeg, MB, Flin Flon, MB, Dauphin, MB, Oshawa ON, and Ottawa ON.

Demchinsky, Sterling : Sterling Demchinsky began photographing Ukrainian churches in Canada in 1995 as a hobby with his brother Bryan, but soon realized the importance of his work as a historical record. Hundreds of country churches built by Ukrainian communities since the end of the nineteenth century are in need of documentation because many of them are in danger of disappearing. In fact, some of the churches documented in this collection have already disappeared, as the supporting community has dwindled and been forced to abandon their centres of worship. Demchinsky has given the following reason for his work:

"So many churches are in danger of closing. They deserve to be documented as a symbol of our heritage and as a monument to our pioneer ancestors. Of course, when there are new vibrant Ukrainian churches in Canada, they deserve to be documented too - if for no other reason than that we need to see examples of success more than ever now.
Sometime in the mid-1990s my brother, Bryan, and I realized that we were both interested in architectural photography and the photography of Ukrainian Churches in particular. We started pooling our resources and have spent many vacations photographing Ukrainian churches together. Once we even spent a few weeks photographing Ukrainian churches in Poland and Ukraine."

Demchinsky has travelled across western Canada almost every year to track down and document often tiny country churches which continue to exist on some level, as well as larger well-supported churches in towns and cities. One of the great strengths of this collection lies in the deep knowledge that the photographer has of his subject, which has allowed him to understand the important historical changes in the Ukrainian Canadian religious culture, and how this is represented in the churches he is documenting.

Physical description note:

The 4x6 prints are taken from 35mm negatives. The 5x5 prints are taken from 60mm negatives. The 60mm negatives were generally used for views of interior iconography, in order to provide greater detail.
