FUGITIVE PIECES is a profound and emotionally-charged drama about love, loss and redemption, based on the acclaimed novel by Canadian poet Anne Michaels. The film tells the story of Jakob Beer, a Jewish man whose life is greatly influenced by his tragic childhood experiences during the Second World War. The story starts in Poland in 1942 as Nazi soldiers brutally murder Jakob's parents and snatch his teenage sister, Bella. Shocked by this horrifying event, Jakob sneaks out of his hiding place inside the house and runs to the woods. An unspecified period of time passes and the boy is found frail and collapsed by Athos Roussos, a Greek archaeologist working at a Polish excavation site in Biskupin. Moved by the sight of the despairing grief-stricken child, Athos daringly smuggles Jakob out of Poland and hides him in his home on the beautiful island of Zakynthos in Greece (also occupied by the Nazis). Vulnerable, untalkative, scared and scarred for life, little Jakob spends the last years of the German occupation in Athos' affectionate guardianship. After the liberation, Athos and Jakob immigrate to Canada, where Athos accepts a teaching position with a university. As Jacob grows up, his life transforms - studying, writing, and even falling in love with Alex, a beautiful young woman. Yet, despite all the positive changes in his life, Jacob continues to be haunted by his parents' tragic destiny and the question of what happened to his beloved sister. This heavy burden makes it impossible for Jacob to detach himself from the agonizing past, to live in the moment or to embrace love. When Athos passes away one day, Jacob is brokenhearted. He finds some relief in writing - the beautiful and sensual art of soul-healing through creative expression which he "inherited" from his tender guardian. But it is not until he encounters Michaela, a compassionate woman who accepts his pain, that Jacob lets himself love and be truly loved. As an adult with a broken heart, Jacob is at last healed by a woman's love. The lessons Jacob learns are carried over to the next generation as they become a legacy to Ben, a neighbour child of two Holocaust survivors, whose life interweaves with Jakob's in meaningful ways. <1h 45mn 45s>
