In 1942 the Canadian government invoked the War Measurements Act to evict the Stoney Point Chippewa community from its ancestral lands on Lake Huron. A cadet training base was built on the site with the promise that the land would be returned after the war. In 1993, tired of waiting, descendants of the Stoney Point community took back the cadet base. In 1995, a number of Stoney Pointers declared their intention to reclaim their sacred burial grounds in nearby Ipperwash Provincial Park. That September, once the park was closed for the season, a small group of native men, women and children moved in. During a peaceful protest in the park over the long-standing Aboriginal ancestral burial-ground claim, protester Slippery George was almost beaten to death while another Native protesters, Dudley George, was shot and killed by Ontario Provincial Police officer Kenneth Deane. The tragic events left Dudley's brother Sam with a "mission" and Canadians asking "why?". ONE DEAD INDIAN is a breathtaking television docudrama that chronicles the incident and the determination of Sam George and the Stoney Point People to ensure that Dudley George did not die in vain. After a trial, Kenneth Deane was convicted of criminal negligence. The George Family pursued its civil suit against the Government of Ontario, Premier Mike Harris and several members of his cabinet. Simultaneously, Premier Mike Harris was challenged by members of the Ontario Legislature to give a fuller account of his involvement with the events at Ipperwash. The George family's civil suit was settled on the day of the 2003 Ontario election. The day after a new Ontario Liberal government was elected, a public inquiry was called into the shooting of Dudley George, nine years after his death. ONE DEAD INDIAN features re-enactments where some characters and events were fictionalized as required to present the story for television. The film also features archival footage of the Ontario's Progressive Conservative Premier, Mike Harris (1995-2002), including footage of Harris' speech in the Ontario Legislature on May 20, 1996. Furthermore, ONE DEAD INDIAN also features a re-enacted telephone conversation between two senior police officers originally recorded hours before Dudley George was killed. <1h 27mn 55s>
