This animated feature is based on the television series FRANKLIN, which itself is based on a series of books by the writer Paulette Bourgeois and illustrator Brenda Clark. The series features adventures of a young turtle by the name of Franklin and his anthropomorphic animal friends. In this film, Franklin's Aunt Lucy, an adventurous archeological explorer, comes for a visit during the summer holidays. Soon after her arrival, Franklin's Granny falls gravely ill. Aunt Lucy and Franklin discover Granny's old treasure map, which shows the location of a special time capsule she had buried near Turtle Lake long, long time ago. Shortly after she buried the capsule, Granny's parents perished in a disastrous house fire and she has not been back since. Aunt Lucy knows about a special charm hidden inside the capsule, which may have magical powers able to cure Granny's illness. Franklin and his friends, Bear and Beaver, together with Aunt Lucy and her obstinate goddaughter Samantha set out on a journey to Turtle Lake to find the precious talisman. This film is done in the traditional 2D drawn animation style, but, unlike the television series, it makes use of a number of "full animation" techniques reminiscent of the classic theatrical cartoons rather than "limited animation" techniques, which are often used in the production of quickly made, economically-efficient television cartoons. The colours in this animated feature are bright, saturated and sunny. The story's flashbacks, however, are more expressionistic. For instance, when Granny remembers events from the past, the dominant colour scheme transforms and the memories assume the look and feel of old sepia-tinted photographs. <1h 16mn 33s>
