Following the Treaty of Paris in 1763, Britain moved to secure its sovereignty over Atlantic Canada. Cook, who had already spent several years in North America working on various mapping projects connected with the siege of Louisbourg and Quebec, was chosen to conduct a survey of Newfoundland waters. He spent five years on the project. This chart was produced by Cook during the summer of 1765.

Cook's chart details the rugged Newfoundland shoreline between Little St. Lawrence and Point May -- the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon lie about twenty km off this coast. It notes the depth of the sea bottom and several sites connected with the cod fishery, a vital industry at the time. The official Geographer to King George III, Thomas Jefferys, used Cook's Newfoundland charts in his North American pilot for Newfoundland, Labradore and River St. Laurence, which was first published in 1770s and was used by mariners for more than a century.

Following his Newfoundland assignment, the Royal Navy promoted Cook and gave him command of three successive expeditions to the Pacific where he quickly earned an international reputation as the first European to sail the eastern coast of Australia, the Hawaiian (Sandwich) Islands and the first circumnavigation of New Zealand.
