News media briefing held in the National Press Theatre in Ottawa and given by senior government officials including Jim Munson, the Director of Communications for Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, the Canadian Ambassador to France Claude Laverdure, the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria Howard Strauss, the Director of operations for Strategic Planning and Foreign and Defence Policy at the Privy Council Office [Dan MacNeil], and the Director General responsible for international organizations at Foreign Affairs [Patricia Lortie], concerning Chrétien’s trip to Abuja, Nigeria, to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and then to Paris, France. Included subjects are the detailed program for Abuja including Chrétien’s address to the closing session of the Commonwealth Business Forum on December 4th, an audience for Chrétien with Queen Elizabeth II, a visit by Chrétien to the High Commission offices in Nigeria to meet the staff, various CHOGM meetings, and a breakfast hosted by Chrétien with the leaders from the Caribbean. Also included subjects are the detailed schedule in Paris including meetings with French President Jacques Chirac and with French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, the launch of a Canada-France program to celebrate in 2004 the 400th anniversary of the French presence in America, and a visit to the Canadian Embassy in Paris by Chrétien to meet the staff. Also included subjects are cooperation within the Commonwealth and the Canadian contribution, the issue of Zimbabwe where inflation, unemployment and food shortages apparently worsen, the situation in Pakistan where Canada still has concerns with the accumulation of military and civil powers by Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, and these two visits seen as a farewell tour in Africa and France. <50mn>
