Way & Co. and Kilborn Engineering Ltd. as a design engineer working on plant layouts, material handling, piping and structural details for three uranium mine projects in Saskatchewan. During the Ontario uranium boom of the mid-1950s, he did all the plant layouts for R.W. Way & Co. on Pronto, Quirke, Nordic, Can-Met, Denison, Stanleigh, Stanrock and Milliken mines at Elliot Lake ON. After this Hussman spent several years as Plant Superintendent at Quirke (uranium) Mine at Elliot Lake ON, and after it closed, he took a similar position with East Malartic (gold) Mines in Quebec for a year.
In 1962 he was asked by K. Dewar of Kilborn Engineering Ltd. to take charge of the expansion design for Timna Copper Mines project in Israel. After this assignment he was project engineer on the International Minerals' expansion project at their Esterhazy potash plant in Saskatchewan. He then moved to Stone & Webster Canada Ltd. and was project engineer for Manitoba Rolling Mills' new melting and casting facility at Winnipeg. He was then asked by Timna Copper Mines to return to Israel and handle their revised expansion program.
Hussman returned to Canada in the fall of 1966 and he was engaged by Rio Algom Mines Ltd., to be a consultant for the rehabilitation and expansion of the Quirke Mine at Elliot Lake. In 1968 he formed David Hussman & Company Limited, offering specialized services in the design of mining facilities. His speciality was the siting, design, costing and preliminary designs of proposed mining ventures. Hussman was a sub-contractor for many years to Jan H. Reimers & Associates Ltd. of Oakville ON for whom he did the preliminary estimates for surface facilities of mines including transport and storage of ore, as well as its smelting, refining and other related facilities. Canadian clients of Reimers/ Hussman included International Nickel of Canada/Inco Ltd., Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Ltd. and Texasgulf Canada Ltd. Internationally they worked on many projects in the United States, Australia, Norway, Indonesia, the Philippines and other parts of the world. Hussman also worked directly for a number of mining companies including Rio Algom Ltd. and Inco Ltd.
With the slowdown of mining in the early 1990s, Hussman shifted his interest to doing design work on computers using CAD/CAM software. His company, known as HUSCO, specialized in helping clients with AutoCAD software as well as in sales and support of the product and associated hardware. David Hussman died on 24 Feb. 2003.
