Davies, Thomas, 1737?-1812 : Thomas Davies (ca. 1737-1812) began his military career after 1755 when he attended the Military Academy in Woolrich, England. He served at Louisbourg and the Montréal campaign and was stationed in Canada from 1757-1767, 1777-1782 and 1784-1792.

It is likely that Davies received his fine art training under G. Massiot, the academy's instructor of landscape drawing from 1744-1768. He liked to paint watercolours of landscapes, cities and stillife views.

Arriving in Halifax with an artillery detachment in 1757, Davies began to produce a number of paintings depicting the Canadian people and landscape.

Thomas Davies left Canada in 1790 to return to England where he became a lieutenant-general by 1803.
