Saint John Port Authority : L'Administration portuaire de Saint John a été créée en vertu de la loi qui a reçue la sanction royale le 9 décembre 1997. À la suite de la décision du C.P. no 1999-0642, des lettres patentes ont été émises le 1er Mai 1999, selon la sous section 12 (1) de la Loi maritime du Canada. L'Administration portuaire de Saint John est l'organisme fédéral responsable de l'exploitation et de la gestion normale des affaires du Port de Saint John au Nouveau-Brunswick.
Le port de Saint John existe depuis le milieu du XVIIIe siècle. Il prit de l'importance, entre autre, avec la fin de la révolution américaine quand des Loyalistes sont venus s'installer à ses abords. En 1785, la ville de Saint John était fondée par une charte royale.
Au début du XXe siècle, le port prit de l'expansion et participa de plus en plus au commerce international. De plus, des facteurs extérieurs à la ville de Saint John, tels que le développement du réseau ferroviaire ainsi que de nouveaux acteurs comme le gouvernement fédéral commencèrent à influencer l'évolution du port. C'est ainsi qu'en 1927, devant le caractère national grandissant du port de Saint John, celui-ci fut nationalisé. Le gouvernement fédéral devenait propriétaire des infrastructures du port et responsable de sa gestion.
En 1936, le gouvernement fédéral créa le Conseil des ports nationaux qui centralisa les ports. Le port de Saint John en fit naturellement partie jusqu'en 1983, année où le Conseil des ports nationaux fut remplacé par la Société canadienne des ports. Cette nouvelle institution mettait l'accent sur le besoin d'accorder une grande marge d'autonomie aux ports tout en les conservant à l'intérieur d'un cadre national. C'est dans cet état d'esprit que la Société portuaire de Saint John fut établie en 1986. Cette société était toujours rattaché à la Société canadienne des ports, mais jouissait d'un degré d'autonomie élévé. Cette structure perdura jusqu'en 1995, année où le gouvernement fédéral confirma son intention de se retirer de l'exploitation directe des ports. C'est depuis ce temps que le port de Saint John est constitué en une Administration portuaire autonome.
L'objectif de l'Administration portuaire de Saint John est de garantir l'efficacité du transport des marchandises et des voyageurs par le port de Saint John, et de servir, au mieux, les intérêts des Canadiens par l'exploitation de services et d'installations sécuritaires, compétitifs, rentables et fiables.
L'Administration portuaire est gérée par un conseil d'administration qui rend compte au Parlement par l'entremise du ministre des Transports.
