This sub-series offers insight into Canada's diplomatic relations with other countries. Its files document not only diplomatic visits, but the reasons behind them. Economic cooperation, social development, trade expansion, industrial growth and international security are just some of the issues involved in visits to Canada by foreign dignitaries.

This sub-series concerns visits to Canada by various foreign dignitaries (i.e. monarchs, presidents, prime ministers, cabinet ministers, secretaries of state, church dignitaries, representatives of international bodies, etc.). It also concerns relations (necessary to organize such events) between the PMO Director of Operations, the Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Department of National Defence. The files contain visit-related correspondence, itineraries, agendas and timetables.

The sub-series also contains files on the hosting of international summits in Canada, including APEC (Vancouver, 1997); the NAFTA Free Trade Commission (1999); the Francophone Summit (Moncton, 1999); the Conference of Spouses of Heads of State and Government of the Americas (Ottawa, 1999); the general assembly of the Organization of American States (Windsor, June 2000); the International Liberal Biennial Convention (Hull, October 2000); and the Summit of the Americas (Quebec City, April 2001).
