Interview of Mrs. Rita Anderson of Toronto. She was born in 1902 in Toronto. Subjects discussed include: growing up in Toronto on Victoria Street, Church Street and Parliament Street; her father’s job driving a horse and wagon; her education; childhood games such as skipping; going to church with her families; attending the Fred Victor Mission where she saw films and sang songs; the strictness in school; quitting school after Grade 8 because the family could not afford to buy high school text books; her father starting his own business; more about religion and school; Victory Gardens during World War One; scarcity of sugar and other food during the war; the high cost during the war of food such as sugar and meat; raising chickens; more about childhood recreational activities and church-going; her father not wanting her mother to leave the house; her first job at MacLaughlin’s at Sherbourne and Queen Streets in Toronto; picking strawberries; removing stones from cherries; working conditions; Labour Day parades in the Depression; her Communist sympathies in the 1930s; going to work for the Canadian Bag Company making jut bags for sugar; details of working conditions; streetcar strikes; working conditions in the bag factory; her job at P.W. 1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5.
