Interview of Teodore Kolba, who was born in Harrisburg, Manitoba in 1905 to Ukrainian immigrants. Subjects discussed include: his early life; working on the railway in 1913 and 1914; clearing the bush; his schooling; keeping his accent because his mother’s language is "embedded" in him; hearing English for the first time in school; how the Poles helped the Ukrainians in the area build their first church and the Ukrainians did the same for the Poles living in the area; conscripting the boys in the community when the First World War broke out; trouble between the Ukrainians and the French and Belgian boys because the French and Belgians thought the Ukrainians were Austrians; the work he did during the war; working as a water boy on the railway during the summer, at the same pay as an adult; how the English people got jobs such as timekeepers and foremen, while the Ukrainian and Polish workers got harder jobs; more about the schools; how the Ukrainians went to school in groups to protect each other; working in lumber camps; his life after World War One; and working conditions.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI. ~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
~6. Some of the handwritten notes, possibly made by the interviewer, are illegible (insofar as they could be read, the information has been added to this description).
