Interview of A. Hunt, age 84, who was born in Kent, England and came to Canada in 1910. Subjects discussed include: relatives who served in the army; his marriage in 1915; his early life on a farm and the move of his family to Canada; his first impressions of Canada as a "lovely place" and of Quebec City as "out of this world"; efforts by his oldest brother to enlist; the decision by people to enlist because the country needed them and they wanted some adventure; speculation in August 1914 about what Canada would do about the war; the feeling among the English, Irish and Scots in Canada that enlisting would give them "a free boat ride home" and a chance to visit relatives; the sense that the war would not last long; the decision by some English immigrants to stay in England after the war; his work for the Imperial Bank during the war; his work for Simpson’s from 1910 to 1914; his job as a mail clerk at the bank and manager of hockey teams; his salary; buying his first house in 1931; his involvement in the Officer Training Corps at the University of Toronto during the war; his concern with job security; working conditions at the Toronto Street Railway; Tommy Church and how he helped the war veterans; the physical and mental problems suffered by war veterans; Armistice celebrations; the death of his brother-in-law shortly after arriving in France; and reserve units formed by veterans to engage in sports and other social activities; and the shortage of goods during the war and the high prices.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.
~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
