An interview with W.E. Charlton,age 99, who was born in England in 1875 and came to Canada in July 1913. This is part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI. Subjects discussed include: his career as a letter press printer; his decision to move to Canada because of lectures soliciting emigration and the desire of his wife to move; job hunting when he arrived in Canada; his work at The Methodist Book Room, a printout house, throughout the First World War; the government contract held by the Methodist Book Room; work as a hand typesetter; the typesetting process; his decision to leave the printing trade during a postwar strike and go to college to study chiropractic; the Typographical Union; his not being an active union member; the loss of the contract by the Methodist Book Room due to high prices; overtime; wages; no strikes during the war; purchasing a house; his garden; neighbourhood children stealing fruit from his garden; taking the horse drawn streetcar to work; weekends and holidays; the enlistment of his friend; the enlistment of workers from the printing shop; more overtime for the workers who stayed on the job; his son’s education and career; the lack of animosity he faced for not enlisting; more about the strike in the printing shop after the war, leaving him idle, and his consequent decision to go back to school; the declaration of the armistice; stories told by the men who returned from the war; his various homes; attending the Jarvis Street Church; charity work during the war; and the people getting back into their regular routine after the war.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~4. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
