Amateur footage of cross-country skiing on the country estate of Dr. Edward M. Kindle and on the property of Dr. Charles E. Niven of the National Research Council in Ottawa East. As of the 1970s, the area of the Kindle property encompassed Kindle Lane and Briarcliffe Court, Blair Road North and Upper and Lower Rothwell Heights. The locale situated near the foot of Skead Road (later Blair Road North) was later turned into a sub-division. Some scenes show "the Ridge Runs", later Upper Rothwell Heights on Montreal Road, and the birch-clad hills running down onto the Ottawa River just opposite Upper Duck Island, later known as Lower Rothwell Heights, adjacent to Briarcliffe. This was a privately-owned area mostly used by the Kindles, their relatives, friends and the family of Mrs. Aileen White. Two of the wooded trails shown in the film wandered through Wonder Woods at Briarcliffe and as of the 1970s were known as Kindle Lane and Briarcliffe Court. Among the skiers are: Bert Walsh, an Ottawa real estate agent, Dr. Edward D. Kindle, a retired geologist formerly with the Geological Survey of Canada, who is shown in a long coat and street felt hat near the end of the film, Doris "Dodie" Lucas (who later married Austen Edwards), Hammett Kenney, Betty "Gangleshanks" Lee (later Mrs. Bill Moers), Marjorie Howe (later Mrs. Tom Gregory), Katherine "Kuffy" Kindle (later Mrs. D.L. Smith), Madeline "Mad" Kindley Campbell, Charlotte "Chuzzy" Kindle, Norman Campbell, Ross Campbell, Charlie "rubber knees" Shierlain and Tom Gregory (Bisley marksman). <25mn>

1. Printed from regular 8mm black-and-white reversal positive which was subsequently returned to the donor, Mrs. Katharine Smith (Mrs. Douglas L. Smith), sister of Dr. Edward D. Kindle.~2. Shot by Mr. N.W. Campbell in January, February and March 1939.~3. According to the sister of Katherine Smith, as related in a letter to Bill Galloway of the National Film Archives, dated 10 September 1973, the film was made on three different Sunday outings in January, February and March 1939. Other locations and people are identified in a note provided by Mrs. Smith.~4. Duration is approximate.
