Fonds comprises original artwork and four photographs relating to the life and work of commercial artist A. Bruce Stapleton. Included are original watercolour mock-ups for advertisements for the Tourism Board of Ontario, Arrowroot Biscuits and Christie's Biscuits; forty photomechanical reproduction labels created for liquor products sold by the Liquor Control Board of Ontario; examples of Second World War posters created for the Canadian Red Cross; a book jacket; a self-portrait on canvas; and three paintings recreating the life of natives in Canada.

Stapleton, Archibald Bruce, 1910-1981 : Bruce Stapleton was born in Stratford, Ontario on July 19, 1910. He graduated from Stratford Collegiate and moved to Toronto where he entered the Ontario College of Art. His mentors at the time were J.E.H. MacDonald, Franklin Carmichael and Arthur Lismer. Stapleton was the recipient of several scholarships. After graduating, Stapleton began a long and successful career as a commercial artist. During the war years, he created several posters in support of the war effort as well and illustrated several Maclean's Magazine covers. He earned an Award of Merit from the Association of Canadian Artists for his war-related work. During the 1940s, Stapleton was a member of the Ontario Society of Artists and the Royal Academy of Arts, exhibiting annually with both associations.

For a number of years he was Art Director at the well-known firm of Rolph, Clarke and Stone and was associated as well with E.S. & A. Robinson, both of Toronto. In 1956, he moved with family to Vancouver where he continued with his flourishing commercial work. His work frequently focused on historical recreations and on portraiture. After his retirement in 1971, the artist became active in the Federation of Canadian Artists and was elected President in 1980. His work is featured in the collections of the Canadian War Museum and in the McCord Museum in Montreal as well as many commercial establishments which commissioned him for his portraits. Stapleton died in 1981.
