LIE WITH ME is a dramatic feature centered around the female character Leila, her emotional and sexual exploration during one summer in Toronto and her relationship with a young man named David. The film opens with a sequence of Leila, a slight, fair skinned, red haired twenty-something, masturbating while watching pornography and over the course of the first 20 minutes the film establishes her advanced sexual appetite through a series of interactions, at a nightclub, in an alley, during the day at a playground, as well as through voice-over of the characters perspectives on sex. It is during one of these interactions which Leila meets David and after an early sexual encounter she falls deeply for him. Early in the film a sub-plot is developed in which Leila’s parents are splitting up, and Leila must sort through both the emotional (her father now a lethargic marijuana smoker and mother a needy emotional wreck) and physical (the contents of her childhood room) remnants of their relationship. David has different relationship with his parents. His parents are absent and he lives with what can be conjectured as his aging grandfather for whom he must care for including bathing and bedding. Much of the relationship between David and Leila is developed in the film through sexual interactions and as we reach the half way mark David professes his love for Leila in one of the films more intense sex scenes. Leila is unsure how to incorporate love into the controlled life of sexual indulgence she has been leading. As the final third of the film begins David’s father passes away, and sadder meditations on the nature of love and sex in relationships take over the film. David throws Leila out as he returns to his previous girlfriend who was introduced at the start of the story. Leila tries to continue in her prior sexual lifestyle, as the character continues her voice-over thoughts on the role of sex in our lives, but she cannot get David from under her skin and frustrated, she can no longer bring herself to orgasm. The disintegration of her parent’s relationship also deepens until the house in finally sold. It seems that she has accepted the fate of her relationship with David, until she is headed for her cousin’s wedding when she passes David by happenstance. David follows her in his truck and waits for her after the wedding. He had no way of contacting her, and their chance meeting is rocky, but David persists through the emotional baggage Leila presents and they are reunited. <92mn>
