Carlyle, Thomas, 1795-1881 : Thomas Carlyle was a Scottish historian, critic, teacher and writer that lived from December 4, 1795 - February 5, 1881. He is best known for his social commentaries and historical writing, including The French Revolution: A History.

Thomas Carlyle was educated at the University of Edinburgh, and worked as a mathematics teachers while writing. He married essayist Jane Welsh in 1826; their passionate but sometimes tumultuous relationship provided inspiration both for their own writing and for that of their biographers.

Thomas Carlyle's elder half-brother John Carlyle and youngest sister Janet "Jenny" Carlyle were the Carlyle family members who settled in Canada; Carlyle maintained a relationship with these siblings, and their children, through written letters.
