Fonds contains correspondence between Gabrielle Roy and himself, dating between July 20, 1962 and July 19, 1978. It contains a photograph of Sally McMahon Murphy (John Murphy's wife) and Gabrielle Roy, sitting on the front steps of Roy's home in Petite-Riviere-St. François, Quebec, taken in July 1962. The copy of "Literature and Belief" contains an article by Murphy, titled "A Gabrielle Roy Miscellany," in which the original correspondence contained here is reproduced and presented along with a short essay titled "The Personality of Gabrielle Roy," as well as Murphy's previously unpublished review titled "Roy's 'Garden in the Wind,' A Western Story." Three published essays authored by Murphy are included: "Visit with Gabrielle Roy," "Alexandre Chenevert: Gabrielle Roy's Crucified Canadian," and "The Louvre and Ungava."

John Murphy (1933- ) : John Murphy (1933 -) (John Joseph Murphy) is Professor Emeritus of American Literature at Brigham Young University in Utah. He is the former Editor of Literature and Belief and of the Willa Cather Newsletter and Review. He has published numerous works about Willa Cather, whose art he has compared to Gabrielle Roy's.
