A tribute to Healey Willan on his 75th birthday. In the first part of this broadcast, the choir of St. Mary Magdalene Church, Toronto, for whom the music was composed, sings works by Willan under his direction: The Kyrie Eleison from his Missa Brevis No. 1; three short motets: I beheld her beautiful as a dove, Fair in face but fairer far in Thy Faith, Rise up my love; and two more liturgical motets: Behold the tabernacle of God and Hail gladdening light. From Grace Church on the Hill, Toronto, organist Gerald Bales plays Willan's Introduction, Passacaglia and Fuge. The St. Mary Magdalene Choir sing two secular part-songs: Sweet nymph that liv'st again unseen and In you is pleasure. Part two consists of a portrait of Healey Willan, with a montage of unidentified voices of friends, acquaintances and pupils describing him. Louis Applebaum, Sir Adrian Boult and Easson Humphrey talk about Willan. Willan tells an anecdote about a preacher. Others continue to talk about Willan. Willan talks about his early training at St. Saviour's Choir School in Eastbourne, England. Ernest Morgan, a former CBC music producer, recalls Willan's early days in Canada, circa 1919 or 1920. Willan describes how he selects his choristers. A chorister describes an incident at a rehearsal. Others continue their comments. Sir William McKie, organist at Westminster Abbey, talks about Willan's music. The program breaks off abruptly at this point. The last half-hour of the program is missing. <1h>
