Oral history recording of Abraham Rauchwerger, born in Lodz, Poland in 1911. Rauchwerger was confined in the Lodz ghetto until 1944, was on the last Jewish transport out of the Lodz ghetto, and was transported to Auschwitz where he spent five weeks before being transferred to the Goerlitz concentration camp. Rauchwerger was part of a work crew at Goerlitz that went out daily to work at a tank factory in Womack. He spent nine months in Goerlitz, and wore the same lice infested shirt for nine months. He was marched to work everyday at 3 am, rain or snow, often without shoes. Between 40 and 60 people died each month from severe conditions and lack of nutrition. The main focus of discussion is Jacob Tannenbaum, a man charged in 1985 with being a supervisory "kapo", an inmate overseer of the prisoners at the Goerlitz during WWII. Rachwerger recalls crimes committed by Tannenbaum against the prisoners, most of whom were Hungarian Jews. He also discusses his surprise to find Tannenbaum had emigrated to the United States following the war; the assistant "kapo" Scheinbaum; and Rauchwerger’s life in Canada following the war. <45mn>
