Kallmann, Helmut, 1922-2012 : Né à Berlin (Allemagne) en 1922, Helmut Kallmann émigre en Angleterre en 1939, où il entreprend de brèves études en piano et théorie de la musique, avant d'être interné en 1940 (en raison de sa citoyenneté allemande) et ensuite au Canada de 1940 à 1943. Établi à Toronto en 1944, il reprend ses cours de piano et obtient un baccalauréat en musique de l'Université de Toronto en 1949. L'année suivante, Kallmann commence sa carrière de bibliothécaire de musique à la bibliothèque de musique de la SRC à Toronto, dont il devient superviseur en 1962. Depuis ses études à l'Université de Toronto, Kallmann s'intéresse à l'histoire musicale du Canada, champ d'études qu'il maintient et élargit lors de son passage à la bibliothèque de la SRC. Il ainsi révise, dirige et ajoute une dimension historique au Catalogue of Canadian Composers de la SRC (édition de 1952). Il rédige en 1960 A History of Music in Canada 1534-1914, le tout premier ouvrage à paraître sur le sujet sous forme de volume. Les notes historiques et bibliographiques accumulées au fil des ans par Kallmann constituent une source importante de renseignements pour la première édition de l'Encyclopédie de la musique au Canada, dont il est l'un des trois codirecteurs de rédaction. En 1970, Kallmann est nommé au poste de chef de la toute nouvelle Division de la musique de la Bibliothèque nationale du Canada (BNC). À la BNC, Kallmann supervise l'élaboration d'une collection nationale exhaustive de documents de bibliothèque et d'archives sur l'histoire de la musique au Canada et l'organisation d'expositions sur des personnalités marquantes, telles que Healey Willan et Glenn Gould. Kallmann joue un rôle actif dans de nombreux organismes et revues de bibliothéconomie et de musique, notamment l'Association canadienne des bibliothèques musicales (cofondateur en 1956, et président), la deuxième Association canadienne des bibliothèques musicales (ACBM; établie en 1971), l'Association internationale des bibliothèques musicales (délégué canadien), la Société pour le patrimoine musical canadien (cofondateur), le Conseil canadien de la musique (directeur et vice-président), le Canadian Music Journal (membre du comité de rédaction) et les Cahiers canadiens de musique (membre du comité de rédaction). En tant qu'auteur prolifique et ultime spécialiste de l'histoire musicale du Canada, Kallmann participe souvent à la réalisation d'ouvrages de référence internationaux sur la musique en ajoutant ou en corrigeant le contenu canadien. Au nombre des hommages et distinctions qui lui sont décernés, mentionnons un doctorat honorifique de l'Université de Toronto (1971), la Médaille du Conseil canadien de la musique (1977), sa nomination comme Membre de l'Ordre du Canada (1986), des mélanges lors de sa retraite de la BNC en 1987 et l'attribution, en son honneur, de son nom au Prix de reconnaissance pour services exceptionnels de l'ACBM en 2000.
