The National Air Photo Library (NAPL) 'A-Series' of aerial photography consists of photograhy that was first obtained in 1928. The series is composed of analog film from aerial surveys that were initiated by the NAPL with the primary objective of mapping the country. The majority of the photography in the series was captured under contract to the RCAF, various commercial areal surveying firms and by the NAPL itself.

The collection dates between 1928 through 2000 and contains both vertical and oblique images on black and white, as well as colour film. There are: 22,912 rolls of 9.5 inch monochrome (black & white) film; 1,250 rolls of 9.5 inch colour film; 1,629 rolls of 70mm black and white film.

Beginning in 2006, the NAPL started scanning the entire collection of A series photograhy because it was considered that continued use of the analog film was placing the imagery at risk of being lost. As that film is being scanned, archival quality digital imagery is being transferred to LAC.

Custodial history:

The material in this series consists of high resolution aerial photography that has been scanned from film that is being stored by the NAPL at 2464 Sheffield Road in Ottawa. This material is being transferred to Library and Archives Canada over an extended period of time and the first transfer commenced in November 2006.
