Radio program in a series about Howie Wing, a 21-year-old pilot. This episode begins with the narrator explaining that Zero Smith and [Burton) York, crew members of a Trans-Oceanic Aviation flying boat, are up to no good. Their actions caused veteran Captain Bill Harvey to be remanded for a pilot's board because of a navigation problem. Harvey refused to fly the plane and resigned. Smith and York also picked a fight with Howie. Trans-Oceanic's President, Mr. [McCook], asked Smith to fly the plane from Shediac, New Brunswick to the base at Botwood, Newfoundland. Carelessly, Smith almost ran into a harbour tugboat while taxiing for takeoff and only the quick action by Howie Wing prevented an accident. This episode's action starts after Wing gets the plane safely back to the pier and is on the pier talking to his friend Harvey. Howie recounts to Harvey how he saved the ship. McCook comes along to talk to Harvey and asks Howie to leave so they can speak in private. McCook and Harvey discuss the near-accident, Howie's ability and the problems with Smith. McCook tells Harvey that the pilot's board is cancelled and apologizes, reinstating him as commander of the aircraft and asking him to fly the plane back to Botwood. McCook tells Harvey that he is in charge of the tests the plane is still undergoing. They discuss Harvey's fears that the plane is in some kind of danger and McCook tells him to investigate. They know that something is wrong with Zero Smith and that [Burton] York has something to do with it. McCook leaves. Donna Cavendish, a friend of Howie's, comes along and talks to Harvey, excited that he is going to fly again. The crew cheers when Harvey tells them to prepare the plane for takeoff. Howie will be first officer, Langford second officer and Smith navigator. Amidst the sounds of the Captain giving orders, engines starting and the crew bustling about, Smith and York mutter that their deal is not going according to the plan and York says they should do something to Howie. When the plane is in the air, Harvey talks to Howie about the plane and how it is operating. Happy Appleby tells Harvey that the oil pressure is dropping in number four engine. Harvey tells him to stop the propeller and fix the engine. The plane can fly on two engines, if necessary. The crew prepares to stop the propeller using the prop brake for the first time. Smith is part of the repair crew and goes out onto the wing, but by mistake he releases the cowling and ends up dangling on the wing. The episode ends with Smith yelling for help. <10mn 30s>

The Toronto Star of 27 January 1938, p. 26, advertised that HOWIE WING, "the dramatic story of a young airman", would begin broadcasting on radio stations CFRB in Toronto from 5:15 to 5:30 p.m. and CFCO in Chatham, Ontario from 5:45 to 6 p.m. on Monday, 31 January 1938, and that it was scheduled every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. ~5.
